How much has job search changed over the years? My answer, not as much as you may think. But what most never talk about is how mentally exhausting the process is.
I’m super excited to deliver a presentation next week to a group of career advisors on job search trends. What I realized when creating the presentation was that as much as things have changed, the job search process is pretty much the same.
- Clarity/focus on future career/job
- Fine-tune messaging (written and spoken)
- Tap all possible sources of potential jobs
- Follow up
- Prepare and practice for interviews
- Know your salary and negotiate the offer
Simple, right?
It’s not. One of the biggest obstacles for job seekers is staying motivated and on track during this marathon process. On average, it will take 41 days from getting posted to filled.
I often say that 98% of job search success comes from mental/emotional well-being and 2% from strategy/actions.
So what are you doing to maintain your well-being?
In this week’s Summary Sunday, you’ll learn about:
- Decrease in white collar jobs
- List of weekly networking events
- Tips to recover from rejection
- 5 smart questions to ask during the job interview
- Changes to LinkedIn Audio events
- 8 free career assessments
- Bluesky features you should know about
- 6 tips to regain your love of reading
I carefully curate these articles each week to highlight the thoughts and perspectives of other experts. Follow and enjoy their work.
JOB SEARCH
White Collar Jobs; worst hit jobs | Olivia Palak
If you want to hear from someone who has been laid off and looking (for too long), this provides details about the economy and the white-collar tech recession. But it’s not just tech, many white-collar jobs across industries have seen declines in hiring since 2018. As a recruiter, Olivia knows the drill, but what she is seeing and experiencing is still difficult to deal with.
Weekly Networking Events for Job Seekers | Kenneth Lang
One way to feel less isolated when unemployed is to attend networking events or job search training related events. This post is a weekly listing of many networking events available online. Kenneth posts a new listing each week.
3 Tips To Recover After Rejection | Adam Broda
Every interview will not convert into a job offer. You realize this, but rejection still hurts. These 3 reminders will help you stay in the game. And know, you aren’t alone.
INTERVIEWING
Ask Smart Questions, Land More Offers | The Random Recruiter
Are you asking questions during the job interview? Well, here’s what Random wrote in his newsletter: “As a recruiter, I’ve screened thousands of candidates the past 10 years. And let me tell you, the bar is set extremely low when asking questions. Candidates either don’t have any or ask something super generic like “tell me about the day-to-day” that doesn’t impress the hiring team at all.”
See the 4 benefits of asking questions and 5 questions that will instantly elevate you.
LinkedIn Audio Events Changes | Kevin D. Turner
This may not be important to most of you, but for those who host LinkedIn Audio Events, it seem to be a huge disappointment. Hosts will have to use a third-party provider and only pre-designated guests will be able to speak. If you haven’t experienced a LinkedIn Audio event, this probably won’t mean much. But it’s evidence that LinkedIn is always making changes.
